Good afternoon,
It is a great honor to stand here giving the valedictorian speech. My name is Sin Chi, representing the graduating cohort of the 2020 Diploma in Logistics and Supply Management.
In 2020, as the Covid19 situation deteriorated, the Circuit Breaker measures were implemented, and the customs border closed down. Working from home was the default mode. I then decided to grab this opportunity to take up a course for upgrading. I was from a product development background and had zero knowledge in the logistics sector. And I realized the importance of understanding the logistics and supply chain workflow and the value-add it would bring to my job. My colleague from the logistics department then recommended me the SIPMM. She is also an alumnus of SIPMM.
During my diploma journey with SIPMM, I am grateful to have Mr. Alex Loo and Mr. David Tan as the course instructors for the Warehouse and Logistics Management modules. They are experienced in the industry and have shared theory and practical knowledge. That was a wide eye-opener for me. Professor Poh, our facilitator for Research Project, guided me well through the research project term, which allowed us to learn how logistics and supply chain has played a part in my job as a product development engineer. I would also like to thank my project Group 4 members, Clarence, Kelvin, Melvin, and Wei Jian. I will not forget how we helped each other and made it through together!
My course term started in Jun 2020, which was during phase 2 of the post-circuit breaker. Home-based learning was still the default mode for schools. We attended all the lessons via Virtual Classroom. During the first term, even though the lecturers advised us to turn on the cameras, however, there were only a few students who did, but most of them did not, including me! During the 2nd term, the research project with Professor Poh, class participation became part of the grading, and most of us started to show faces in the virtual lesson. At the end of the class, Professor Poh would take a screenshot of us showing our faces and email us. As we could not see each other faces physically, these screenshots are indeed memorable pieces that we could keep for a lifetime.
Lastly, I would like to end my speech with a Chinese Proverbs quote: Learning is like rowing upstream; not to advance is to drop back. I hope that we don’t stop the learning process after today’s graduation ceremony but continue along the way in our life.
